The idea of urban regeneration is developed through the creation of a productive area, that combines public and private functions. Given its location, the site has the potential to enhance the social and economic value of the surrounding context + broader city. With the intent of establishing stronger bonds with place and community, this proposal seeks to introduce a human centric programme designed to encourage knowledge exchange through social interaction. Drawing from the concepts of sustainable mobility, pedestrian + cycling paths are introduced to complete the connection with the natural + urban context. These paths intend to heal the fracture between the historical centre + the residential expansion area, whilst creating an attractive destination for locals and tourists.
The proposal involves the rethinking of existing volumes of low architectural value; with the exception made for Building E, which due to the location + architectural features, is to be restored and converted into a cultural building; a museum for the historical testimony of the site. The internal walkways + vegetation are preserved in order to minimise the impact of the site works.
Phase 1 consists of one catalyst building; a showcase of public functions for the city + the surrounding area. Placed at the west entrance of the site, it is a gateway to the new urban square. Phase 2 of the project is characterised by flexibility + realised with temporary structures and a reconfiguration of the space to encourage social interaction through sport, temporary events, and spontaneous manifestations.
In conclusion, the masterplan is a concept capable of generating productivity and prosperity through integrating social + economic agendas. A new space for the city that we call: Cuneo Creative Plaza.
